Hello all! It is mid day Saturday here in Managua and I am at Ricardo's office using his computer. Well, after i arrived in managua i contacted Ricardo and he picked me up from the airport. its always a bit unnerving using the hospitality club-couch surfer groups...but i have never had a bad experience. Ricardo picked me up at the airport and he is very very nice and accomodating. He had to go back to work so he dropped me off at the mall here where i had an iced coffee and tried to stay cool and get my bearings. In the evening i went to his apartment....he let me use his apartment while he stayed over at his parents place. The area he lives in is very dangerous...drugs, gangs, bars on the window etc. So he told me not to go out alone when the sun sets. his apartment had cable so i was able to watch the debates and eat a sandwich..i was very tired so i went to bed early. however, i woke up a few times because of mosquitos and then there was a geko lizzard that decided to get in bed with me!!! There are no screens on the window so i had to put some deet on. Plus no AC. There is only cold water for the shower and the kitchen is like my El Salvador expreience....it is outside. So i know this probably sounds like "what kind of vacation is that? why would you live that way?"...as difficult and uncomfortable as it is at times...it makes me appreciate what i have back home...plus i like spending some time with the locals to see what life is really like....not just on the tourist path. Plus what it lacks in American convenience it makes up with in hospitality, friendliness, openness and kindness...something i often don´t find back home or on tourist traveled areas. But most importantly i learn about others values, hopes, dreams, and their lives and realize how similar we all are. nicaragua is the 2nd poorest country in the western hemisphere after Haiti...and it is definitely poor here much poorer than my other latin american countries i've been to. I woke up and Ricardo and I went out for coffee and he had to work a little bit until 1 pm....after he is done with work we will go around the city and he wants to take me to some of the discos tonight. Tomorrow i will take a bus to Granada where i have reseravations at a resort with AC!!! |
